Visit 1

During our visit we met the year 9 students at Beckmead School for Boys. The boys were very nice but initially quite shy which we expected and happened to reflect the way that we felt too. Once we'd calmed down and began doing the workshop which was led by Lucy, we began to chill out a bit more and become more relaxed which caused the boys to relax too. This warm up meant that by the time we got to the first activity we were able to communicate with the boys easier because the initial unknown fear had vanished.

The first warm up consisted of us walking around the space so that we could all be singular and therefore gain focus as a solo. This proved difficult for the boys as they all clumped together in the center of the space at the start which was a reflection of their embarrassment and was accompanied with laughter. However eventually the boys spread out more with direction and were able to become focused because they weren't bouncing off of the same embarrassment and nerves.

We then began to  introduce ourselves to each other in different ways which meant that we were able to form a physical relationship before jumping into activities. This made the next part of the workshop a lot easier because we weren't afraid to get up close and personal. Doing the activities together rather then instructing them and watching them do it also meant that we had a common ground and a friend based relationship rather than a teacher student relationship.

The first activity included the group being slit into two. We then all got together and made the biggest shape by making our bodies as big as we could and then as weird as we could. The sudden instruction to do this also meant that we didn't have time to question what we were doing or get embarrassed about who we were doing the things with. I think this was a good aspect of leading and should be remembered for next week when we lead the session ourselves.

We then discussed what we love. Things such as football, music, dance, acting and math were common answers. We also discussed favorite colours, football teams, TV shows, music and lots more. We then created a freeze frame of a football match which we presented to the group and it gain recognition instantly. The boys really liked this activity because it included something that they liked and also because they produced something that they had complete control over rather than something that they'd been forced/ told to do. We left the creative production side to them.

We then counter acted the freeze frame with a something that we all hated, we came up with 'detention' and presented this too.

Finally we created a trailer for our favorite movie and presented this back. This was by far the most enjoyed activity and seeing how amazing the other group presented their trailer of a bank robbery made the whole experience more exciting. My group presented a trailer for 'The Last Sunday' which is a comedy. We defiantly made sure our trailer contained some of these moments. For example, we managed to get one the the boys to play the 'girlfriend' role for comedic effect but I thought this was going to be difficult persuading them to do this but they became more willing to do more things as the session went on.

It ended with the boys shaking our hands and telling us that they really enjoyed the session. I think the day was a great success and even the teachers added that they were surprised that none of the boys kicked off or left the lesson. Therefore, our aim for next week is to maintain their focus in the same way but to not put ourselves above them when leading activities.
